A detail is not a wash. A wash takes the dirt off. A detail works on the paint and the interior themselves, and the shop usually wants your car for most of a day. Machine polishing cuts down the fine scratches and swirl marks that years of rough washing left behind, and a ceramic coating holds that finish, but both are usually priced on top of a standard detail unless the package names them. Inside, carpets and seats get extracted rather than wiped, and a real odor problem gets treated at the source instead of sprayed over.
Ask what level of correction you are paying for. A light polish evens out shallow swirls. Heavier correction means more passes and more of the clear coat gone, and there is only so much of it on a car. A shop that sells a coating without saying how much correction comes first is putting gloss over damage.
Two jobs fill most bays. One is prep before a sale or a lease return. The other is a family car with ground-in sand, pet hair and something spilled under a seat. Say which one you have when you call.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a detail different from a wash?
Hours and depth. A wash cleans the surface and you drive away. A detail decontaminates and protects the paint, and the interior gets cleaned far enough to reach under the seats. Machine polishing is a separate line in most price lists, so check whether a package includes it. That is why one is measured in minutes and the other in most of a working day.
What does paint correction actually remove?
Swirl marks, wash scratches, light etching from bird droppings and the dull haze on an older car. It works by removing a thin layer of clear coat so the remaining surface is flat. Deep scratches you can catch with a fingernail go through the clear coat, and polishing will soften them at the edges without making them disappear.
Is a ceramic coating worth paying for?
It depends on what goes underneath it. A coating locks in whatever the paint looks like the day it is applied, so correction first is the part that matters. After that it makes washing easier and holds gloss longer than wax. It is not scratch proof, and any shop that says otherwise is telling you what you want to hear.
Can a detailer get an old smell out?
Often, if they find the source. Smoke, milk and pet accidents soak into the carpet backing and the foam under it, so surface shampoo alone brings the smell back within a week. Ask whether they extract, whether they lift seats or carpet to reach the padding, and what they do about the cabin air filter and the vents.
What should I do before selling the car?
Spend on the interior and the glass before the paint. Buyers sit in the car, smell it and look through the windshield, and a clean trunk and door shuts read as a car that was cared for. Ask for headliner and vent work, and empty the glovebox yourself. Engine bay cleaning is a smaller win than people expect.
