A single bend in the rim flange, on a cast alloy, is routine work and holds up fine. The shop heats the area and presses it back, then checks the wheel for runout on a machine. What should worry you is a wheel that has been straightened before in the same spot, or one bent in two directions, because alloy that has been worked repeatedly loses the toughness it started with.

When the crack runs through a spoke or across the hub face, when it passes near the bolt holes, or when the wheel is bent in more than one plane. Heavy corrosion in the bead seat is another one, because you can clean it today and it will weep air again. Magnesium wheels and most forged racing wheels are refused by ordinary shops, and that refusal is the right answer.

It is a wheel whose face has been machined on a lathe so the metal shows bright, then sealed under clear coat. Repairing one means a lathe and a fresh skim, which not every shop has, and each skim takes metal off. Water that gets under the clear coat causes white spotting that only a re-cut will clear. Some owners give up and have the wheels painted a solid color instead.

Powder coat is thicker and tougher, and it is the usual choice for a set going back into winter service. It is baked on, so the wheel has to be stripped bare and the tire and sensor off first. Wet paint gives a wider range of finishes and matches factory colors more closely, which matters if you are fixing one wheel out of four rather than doing the set.

Close, rarely perfect. Factory finishes age, and a fresh one next to three weathered ones shows, especially on silver and on anything machined. Good shops blend by refinishing the pair on the same side or talk you into doing all four in a slightly different color you actually like. Ask to see a repair they did on a car the same age as yours.
