Overview: Auto Glass Repair
Break a side window and you learn there are two kinds of glass on a car. Side and rear glass is tempered, so it lets go into small blunt pieces instead of cracking. Laminated glass cracks and holds together, which is mostly the windshield, and that has its own category here. Auto glass shops cover everything else: door glass, quarter glass, vent windows, rear windows with the defroster grid and antenna printed into them, sunroofs and full glass roof panels.
After a break-in the glass is half the job. Fragments drop inside the door and land on the window regulator track. A shop that pulls the door panel and vacuums the cavity saves you a rattle and a slow window later. If the thief forced the glass down, have the regulator checked while the door is open anyway.
Glass quality is not all one thing. Glass from the carmaker's supplier, an aftermarket pane and a used pane out of a salvage yard are three different parts at three prices, and cheap glass can distort near the edges. Ask which one is coming and what the warranty covers on the seal.

Can a broken side window be repaired?
No. Side and rear glass is tempered, and once it breaks the whole pane is gone, so replacement is the only option. Repair is for laminated glass, which on most cars means the windshield. A few quieter models use laminated side glass, and the shop can tell from your VIN which one you have.
What happens to the glass inside the door?
It falls to the bottom of the door and sits on the window regulator. A proper job takes the door panel off, vacuums the cavity, checks the regulator and the weather seal, then fits the new pane. Fragments left behind scrape the new glass on the way up and grind in the track for months afterwards.
Does it matter whose glass they fit?
It can. Glass from the carmaker's supplier matches the tint band, the shade and the mountings exactly. Aftermarket glass runs from very good to slightly distorted near the edges, and you notice that most in a door window you look through at an angle. On a rear window with a defroster grid and an antenna in it, the connector fit matters too.
Will my heated rear window still work?
It should. The defroster grid is printed onto the glass, so a new rear window brings a new grid with it and the shop reconnects the tabs at each side. Test it before you pay, along with the antenna if yours is in the glass. A single failed line on old glass is a repair kit job, not a new window.
Should I claim on insurance for a smashed window?
Comprehensive coverage is what pays for glass, and the deductible decides whether a claim is worth making at all. Glass rules differ by state, so ask your insurer what applies to a window rather than a windshield, since the two are often treated differently. Shops that bill insurers directly usually say so on their website.
