A detail is not a wash. A wash takes the dirt off. A detail works on the paint and the interior themselves, and the shop usually wants your car for most of a day. Machine polishing cuts down the fine scratches and swirl marks that years of rough washing left behind. A sealant or a ceramic coating then goes on to hold that finish. Inside, carpets and seats get extracted rather than wiped, and a real odor problem gets treated at the source instead of sprayed over. Ask what level of correction you are paying for. A light polish evens out shallow swirls. Heavier correction means more passes and more of the clear coat gone, and there is only so much of it on a car.
