Magnesium chloride and calcium chloride, commonly used for road de-icing, and specifically used by VDOT, can have an impact on a vehicle's steel components. These chemicals are known to accelerate the corrosion of steel. Here's how: 1. **Corrosion Acceleration:** Both magnesium chloride and calcium chloride are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air. When applied to roads, they can attract water, creating a more corrosive environment. This increased moisture content can speed up the corrosion process on steel components. 2. **Chemical Reaction:** These chloride compounds can react with the iron in steel, forming iron chloride. Iron chloride is highly corrosive and can lead to the breakdown of the protective oxide layer on the steel surface, making it more susceptible to corrosion. 3. **Salt-induced Corrosion:** The chloride ions can penetrate the microscopic cracks in the paint and protective coatings on a vehicle's steel, reaching the metal surface. This intrusion can initiate and promote corrosion over time. To mitigate the impact on your vehicle, consider these tips: - **Regular Washing:** Wash your vehicle regularly, especially the undercarriage, to remove salt residues and prevent prolonged exposure. - **Protective Coatings:** Apply protective coatings or sealants to vulnerable areas to create a barrier between the steel and corrosive elements. You can help minimize the impact of magnesium chloride and calcium chloride on your vehicle's steel components.
