Auto painting is refinishing. One panel somebody keyed, a hood that has gone chalky in the sun, a roof whose clear coat is peeling in sheets, or a full color change on a car that has been parked outdoors for two decades. The paint shops in this category range from production outfits that turn cars around fast to small booths doing one show car at a time.
Nearly all of the cost is preparation. Masking, stripping, sanding, priming, blocking the primer flat. Spraying is the short part of the week. That is why one shop quotes several days and another says come back tomorrow, and it is the whole story behind a cheap paint job that looks fine in the lot and shows every buried scratch by next summer.
Ask what system goes on the car. Single stage lays color and gloss in one pass and suits a work truck. Base coat and clear coat is what the factory sprayed and what a matching repair needs. Matte, satin and candy finishes are a separate skill, and they cannot be polished or spot-repaired the way gloss can.
