Repair Of The Week - BMW 328xi Battery Light On A BMW battery light on problem could be due to a loose or corroded battery cable connection, failed battery, alternator problem, or failed accessory drive belt. Problem: On this vehicle found the accessory drive belt failed due to a oil leak from an oil stand seal leak. The drive belt turns the alternator which stopped charging when the belt failed. Also found there was a coolant hose that had been damaged by the oil leak. Hot engine oil attacks and causes rubber parts such as belts and coolant hoses to deteriorate and fail. During an engine oil change we found a cheap aftermarket oil filter had been installed and had failed. BMW vehicles should use high quality factory oil filters and have regular oil changes. Extended oil change periods on BMW causes engine oil sludge buildup which quickly plugs poor quality aftermarket oil filters. This allows unfiltered oil to circulate and cause excess engine wear. Repair: Diagnose BMW battery light on; find source of BMW oil leak; clean leaked oil on engine; replace BMW oil stand oil seal; replace BMW upper coolant hose; BMW alternator test; BMW battery capacity test; engine oil service using BMW oil filter and BMW factory approved engine oil.
