A worn outer constant velocity joint, almost every time. It clicks because the joint only binds at a steep angle, which is why you hear it turning into a driveway and not on the highway. The noise gets louder over months and then the joint can come apart. Once it clicks, repacking is usually too late and the joint gets replaced.

It whines, and the pitch follows road speed rather than engine speed. A howl that comes only when you lift off, or only under power, usually means the gear mesh or a pinion bearing is worn. A clunk when you change direction points at backlash or a spider gear. Low or ancient gear oil is behind a lot of it, and some units need a specific additive.
