What is ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System)? What makes it important? How does it work? Anti-Lock Braking Systems help prevent a car from skidding or sliding during sudden braking. Anti-Lock Braking systems improve safety because it eliminates situations where the wheels of a vehicles locks up and the vehicle slides down the road. ABS also improves safety because it allows the driver to maintain steering control during sudden braking which in turn helps the driver from colliding with objects down the road. ABS only comes into play when traction conditions are minimal or during sudden panic stops when the tires lose traction and begin to slip excessively. In the picture above the driver on the bottom is driving without ABS and upon sudden braking the wheels lock up, and the vehicle skids down the road without the ability to maneuver. How does it work? If the wheels of a vehicle begin to slow down at a faster rate than that which is programmed in the vehicle's control module, it indicates the wheels are beginning to slip and is in danger of losing traction and locking. The ABS responds by momentarily reducing hydraulic pressure to the brakes on the wheels. This allows the wheel to speed up momentarily so it can regain it's traction. As traction is regained, brake pressure is reapplied to again slow the wheel. This cycle is repeated about 20 times in 1 second. Some vehicles perform this cycle at an even faster rate. Whatever the case, the ABS will react faster than a human could.
