FAQ

Synthetic or conventional oil?

Follow what the manufacturer calls for, not the price. Plenty of modern engines, turbocharged ones especially, were designed around full synthetic and suffer on conventional. Older, simpler engines are fine on conventional. Synthetic holds up better in heat and cold and usually runs a longer interval, which is part of why it costs more per fill. Mixing them harms nothing; you just end up with the weaker oil.

Which oil does my car actually need?

Two things have to match: the viscosity grade and the manufacturer approval. The grade is printed large on the bottle. The approval is in the small print on the back, and it is the part cheap oil often misses. Tell the shop your exact model and engine, then ask to see the bottle going in. A shop that only asks what year the car is has not asked enough.

How often should the oil really be changed?

Go by the manual and the car's own oil-life monitor, not the sticker on the windshield. That sticker often carries a mileage that suits the shop's schedule rather than your engine. Short trips, towing, heat, dust and long idling are hard on oil, and most manuals list a shorter severe-service interval for exactly those conditions. Steady highway miles put you on the longer one.

Do I need the extras they offer in the bay?

Sometimes, and you get to see the evidence first. Air filters and cabin filters are cheap and easy to judge: ask them to hand you the old one and look at it. Wipers are an honest sell if they are streaking. Be slower about flushes and bottled additives, which are the counter's highest-margin items. A calm no costs you nothing and the car will not mind.

What goes wrong with a rushed oil change?

The classics: a drain plug cranked down until the pan threads strip, a filter left loose, the old filter gasket stuck to the engine so the new one leaks past it, and the wrong quantity of oil. Check the dipstick yourself the next morning with the car on level ground, then look underneath for drips. A fresh puddle goes straight back to the shop that did the work.
