
Jim Buttera immigrated to the U.S. from Italy in 1907 to work as a mechanic. In 1916, just before the end of World War I, he began racing cars with great success. In the early 1920s he hired a driver to race the 'Buttera Special', and together they continued to win and set records. Jim retired from racing during the Great Depression and WWII years, and opened the only Volkswagen dealership in the western United States after the war. He was sold on VW because they required dealers to have precision tools, training, and a commitment to outstanding customer service.
