Why does my car leak oil? The most common reason you car may leak oil is due to worn gaskets and seals that are designed to hold those fluids in the system. This usually happens when the leaks occur at the top of you cars engine and end up burning off as it travels down the sides of the engine. A familiar leak from the top of the engine is the Valve Cover gasket. These top end leaks can be a safety hazard as it travels down and saturates components that are not meant to be contaminated by oils such as the alternator, belts, pulleys and other electrical components. Also these types of leaks can catch fire as it travels down the engine and touches hot exhaust parts. The by-product of these fluids are also harmful and some have no odor such as carbon monoxide which can enter the cabin area of the car. The radiator is a very common part that can fail and cause coolant or antifreeze to leak. Power steering pumps, hoses and rack and pinion are also major components that can fail and cause power steering fluid to leak.
